Weight gain is a little discussed secondary consequence of many illnesses and is often accompanied by sensitive skin, mobility problems and discomfort. Our plus size soft knickers, tights and knee highs provide comfort for the weight gain and dry and scaly skin that often accompanies hypothyroidism (under active thyroid). Treatments for other illnesses, such as taking steroids for the treatment of asthma or arthritis, or taking insulin to manage diabetes, can also lead to weight gain. Fibromyalgia and/or Alloydnia can leave its sufferers with super sensitive skin and chronic pain symptoms. Alloydnia (when even light pressure can cause the skin to be super sensitive) muscle, joint, nerve and neuropathic pain can all be exasperated by wearing uncomfortable clothing. Ensuring you are comfortable starts with your underwear. The majority of the pain in Fibromyalgia focuses on the chest, mainly the breast bone and rib cage, making a comfortable bra hard to come by. Short- to medium-term leg swelling can occur as a result of pregnancy, kidney disease, heart failure, chronic lung disease, thyroid disease, liver disease, medications for high blood pressure or blood clot, severe varicose veins, leg ulcers, leg injury or leg surgery and burns to the skin. It can also be a side effect of radiotherapy, leading to swelling, dryness, itchiness, blistering and peeling.

Long-term leg swelling can be caused by lymphedema or Type 2 diabetes. Lymphodema is a swelling of the legs caused by a blockage in the lymphatic system. When the lymph vessels are blocked, fluid can’t be reabsorbed and it builds up in the tissue, causing discomfort, pain and mobility loss.

One of the side effects of Type 2 diabetes is nerve damage (neuropathy), caused by excess sugar injuring the walls of tiny blood vessels in the legs, causing tingling, numbness, burning or pain which, in extreme cases, can lead to the loss of all sense of feeling in the affected limbs.
